Tech Neck!
What exactly is tech neck? Well tech neck is the term given to any pain or discomfort of the neck resulting from repetitively looking down at technology, whether that be phones, tablets, laptops, or computers. Our society is completely digital, and we rely on our devices for just about everything now, spending on average 1400 hours a year looking at our devices may increase strain on your neck which could lead to pain and discomfort. These episodes can resolve with or without treatment but nearly 50% of those individuals with neck pain will continue to have recurrent and frequent episodes of neck pain (Cohen, 2015).
The main consequence of tech neck is the increased load put on the lower neck and upper back straining the spinal joints and muscles in these areas. When this is left, it can lead to chronic neck pain, but this can always be treated. Chiropractic is a great way to begin addressing tech neck and it’s been shown that neck adjustments and basic exercise together can help to resolve and further prevent tech neck (Roni et. al,. 2002). Keep in mind your sitting posture is only something to be concerned about if you are getting pain in the neck when you are sitting down in front of a device. For those who have never had neck pain from sitting in front of a computer or on a mobile device don’t stress about getting neck pain, as if you have been in front of devices for years and never had an issue then you’ll likely be ok & your sitting posture shouldn’t be a big concern, instead be concerned about moving often and not staying in one position for too long.
If you find yourself with tech neck or want to prevent it from occurring, you can do a few things yourself to help.
Firstly, take a look at your work set up ergonomics. The focus on ergonomics should be to help your body be relaxed & allow you to change positions easily i.e. sitting to standing with a sit to stand desk.
Secondly, be conscious of your “tech posture” and shift positions. The main thing is to be comfortable while working and not sustaining any position for too long.
Thirdly, take regular breaks, set times for every half an hour to an hour to remind yourself get up and move around for a while or change your position and posture.
Lastly, but most importantly exercise! There’s no two ways around it, exercise & especially strength work is the best thing you can do for your body.
Tech neck is not all doom and gloom, it’s a simple problem that you can fix on your own with consistent exercise and minor changes to your work routines. However, if you aren’t sure what to do don’t fret, at Seib Chiropractic we are here to help.
